Papa has one grandson; age 12, David Cameron Hurley (who is named David after his grandfather) has the privilege of living just a few blocks away from his Papa, and sees him on a weekly, if not daily, basis. When Cam was an infant, Papa had the gift of being able to sooth him during the cranky hours by pushing him in his stroller up and down neighborhood streets – always in dress pants, dress shirt
and a Panama hat. Papa was one of Cam’s first words and he would chant it over and over whenever he saw his Papa approaching.

Papa often picks Cam up from school and hangs out with him when his parents are working. He chauffeurs Cam around town – taking him on errands and to sporting practices and game, bookstores and Chik-Fil-A. He also has countless times visited the comic book store with Cam. Papa even participated in a local comic book store’s comic book club. That is a sign of true love!

Papa does a great job serving as a motivator. He is always ready to reward good behavior and good grades and celebrate his grandson’s successes. He is also willing to listen to what is not working, but is not tolerant of complaining. Papa was born into a poor family in Scotland – He didn’t even have indoor
plumbing until he was 12 and was the first member of his family to attend college, never mind earn a PhD. Through example and through his “life lessons” talks, he strives to teach Cam about the importance of education, hard work, and family.

Cam truly is a lucky young man. He is blessed to have such a wonderful Papa, who is so invested in making sure he is loved, taken care of and nurtured.
